01 - Process

How It Works

Five steps from source media to ASCII animation, with preview work kept to the selected frame until you ask for full conversion.

01

Select source

Select a browser-readable video file such as MP4, WebM, MOV, or OGV, or upload an animated GIF.

Step 1 of 5

02

Preview frame

Use the timeline to convert only the currently selected frame.

Step 2 of 5

03

Tune ASCII

Adjust width, character ramp, color, brightness, contrast, and edge detail.

Step 3 of 5

04

Convert

Start complete frame-by-frame conversion when ready.

Step 4 of 5

05

Export

Download popular animation formats, or save JSON frame data.

04 - FAQ

ASCII Video FAQ

Answers about frame preview, animated ASCII export, local processing, and related image converters.

01

What formats can I export?

Video to ASCII supports animated downloads plus JSON frame data for workflows that need individual text frames. Use Image to ASCII and Image to ANSI for still image conversion.

02

Can I preview a frame before converting the source?

Yes. The timeline lets you inspect one frame before starting the full animated conversion, which saves time on large files. Tune the preview to your liking, then convert the entire source when you are happy with the result.

03

Can I preview the animation before exporting?

Yes. After conversion, use the built-in playback preview to review motion, timing, readability, and color before downloading. If a section looks noisy, pause and adjust the frame then reconvert.

04

Does conversion upload my media?

No. ASCII conversion and rendering runs entirely in your browser. For more information view our privacy policy. No media is ever uploaded, collected or shared. Everything is local.

05

Can Video to ASCII make colored output?

Yes. Video to ASCII supports single-color styled output to improve the look of the animation. Use Image to ANSI for full color still conversions. Video to ANSI is in development and should be available soon.

06

What kind of source works best as ASCII?

Short videos and GIFs with clear subjects, steady motion, and strong contrast work best. Before exporting, scrub to different frames to make sure the preview looks good.
